Codex Theodosianus
1. Introduction
The Theodosian Code was compiled between 429 and 438 by two commissions on behalf of the Byzantine emperor Theodosius II. It was promulgated in February 438 and came into effect on January 1st 439. The Codex Theodosianus collects a shortened version of all imperial constitutions that had been issued since 312 in 16 books (about 450 titles). Only the text of books 6 to 16 has survived to a large extent, whereas books 1 to 5 must be reconstructed using the Lex Romana Visigothorum. In the northern part of the Francia the Justinian Code could not hold sway, so the Codex Theodosianus remained the most important source for the knowledge of Roman law.
