Bischoff datierte die Handschrift zunächst ins 9. Jahrhundert, änderte aber dann seine Meinung für den Katalog der festländischen Handschriften, wo der Codex nicht aufgenommen ist. Es ist anzunehmen, dass Bischoff die Schrift eher in das frühe 10. Jahrhundert datierte. Der überlieferte Bestand ist das Fragment einer umfassenden Rechtssammlung. Nach den Kustoden zu schließen umfasste der Kodex zumindest 29 Lagen à 8 Blatt, d.h. insgesamt über 230 Blätter. Vermutlich stand das römische Recht am Anfang und wurde durch verschiedene Volksrechte ergänzt. Der fragmentarische Zustand bestand schon, als man die Handschrift Ende des Mittelalters erstmals mit einem Einband versah. Fol. 27v weist Rückstände eines Abdrucks von einem Fragment auf, das auf der Innenseite des Buchdeckels eingeklebt war. Erst im 18. Jahrhundert wurde der karolingische Bestand mit thematisch ganz verschiedenen Dokumenten neu zusammengebunden. Es handelt sich zum einen um eine Kopie der Privilegien der Stadt Gray (dépt. Haut-Saône) aus dem 16. Jh. (fol. 28-33), zum anderen um Ordonnanzen bezüglich der Grande Saunerie von Salins (dépt. Jura) aus dem 17. Jh. (fol. 34-72).
Bischoff at first dated the codex in the 9th century, but then changed his mind; the manuscript is not included in his "Katalog der festländischen Handschriften". Presumably for Bischoff the script rather belonged to the early tenth century. The leaves are the fragment of a comprehensive legal collection. According to the quire numeration the codex must have consisted of at least 29 quires with 8 leaves each, comprising more than 230 leaves in total. Probably Roman law came first and was supplemented by various leges. The codex was already in fragmentary condition the first time it was bound at the end of the Middle Ages. On fol. 27v there are residues of an imprint by a fragment that had once been glued to the inside of the cover. Not before the 18th century were the Carolingian parts rebound together with various other documents, such as a copy of the privileges of Gray (dépt. Haut-Saône) from the 16th century (foll. 28-33) or the ordinances concerning the Grande Saunerie of Salins (dépt. Jura) from the 17th century (foll. 34-72).
Ziel der Bibliotheca legum ist es, einen Überblick über das Rechtswissen, welches in der Karolingerzeit verfügbar war, zu geben. Es wurden nicht nur die in der Karolingerzeit geltenden Kodifikationen aufgenommen, sondern alle Bücher des weltlichen Rechts, die im Frankenreich abgeschrieben wurden. Anfänglich war die Datenbank nur für die interne Nutzung am Lehrstuhl vorgesehen. Im Sommer 2012 entstand jedoch die Idee, dieses Hilfsmittel auch der Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung zu stellen. Zu jeder Handschrift ist eine kurze Beschreibung verfügbar, die Auskunft über haltende Institution, Entstehung und Geschichte des Manuskripts, Inhalt sowie weiterführende Literaturangaben/Informationen umfasst. Diese Handschriftenbeschreibungen, welchen den aktuellen Forschungsstand abbilden, wurden in xml nach TEI P5 Standard ausgezeichnet und stehen auch als Downloads zur Verfügung. Aufgefundene Informationen in Form von Literatur,Webseiten, vorhandenen Digitalisaten etc. wurden gesammelt und verlinkt. Auch eigene Texte, welche der Kontextualisierung dienen, sind im Rahmen des Projektes entstanden und integriert. Neben einer umfassenden Projektbibliographie bieten Register zu Orten, genannten Personen und haltenden Institutionen zusätzliche Orientierung.
The Bibliotheca legum aims at presenting an overview of the legal knowledge that existed in the Carolingian period. All "leges" (secular law texts) that were copied during that time are included. The database was originally prepared for use within the History Department only. The idea to make this tool publicly available emerged in summer 2012. A short description containing information on repository, origin and history of the manuscript, contents as well as additional literature etc. is available for each codex. Those are encoded according to the TEI P5 standard and downloadable in xml format. Further resources like existing descriptions, digital images etc. as well as texts and studies that accrued within the context of the project are also included. A comprehensive bibliography and indices on people, places and repositories facilitate further orientation.
